and Galloway (taking in the former counties of Dumfriesshire, Stewartry of
Kirkcudbright, and Wigtownshire) covers an area of some 2,380 square miles in
the south-west part of Scotland and is the closest part of the UK mainland to
Ireland; it is bordered on the north by South Ayrshire, East Ayrshire and
South Lanarkshire, on the east by the Scottish Borders, the south-east by
Cumbria, and on the south by the Irish Sea. The area includes The
population of the region is 148,580 (2008 estimate, GROS) and has a low
density of 60 persons per square mile. Scenically
it is a microcosm of the whole of Scotland, taking in as it does the
estuaries and bays along the coastline of the Solway Firth, the valleys and
hills of the Southern Uplands, huge wooded areas of commercial afforestation,
and in the north still observable relics of the traditional lead and coal
mining industries (opencast coal mining increasing in the Kirkconnel area). Dumfries

NOTES References to additional places
of interest (“Also see..” below entries) are to places generally up to
6.2mi/10km in distance and if possible by reasonable road access. Listing of places does not
indicate that those places are necessarily open or available to the public. Ordnance Survey 1:50,000
Landranger map/sheet numbers and grid references (to the primary and/or
centralised point and to the nearest kilometre) are shown against the place
name, except for larger areas such as hill ranges. Philip’s Street Atlas
Dumfries & Galloway page number(s) are given after the Ordnance Survey
reference. Photographs for the
majority of national grid squares within Dumfries & Galloway are
available on Geograph.org.uk
(click on their overview map to zoom in). This gazetteer took a
couple of local residents 3 years to research and compile; it continues to be
expanded and updated. Originally
intended for personal use, it was felt that the guide should be available for
everybody. Every care has been taken
to ensure that the descriptions and details are as accurate as possible –
allowing for the fact that each entry is basically a one-line summary. The Index gives a
comprehensive list of places, with principal references where details may be
found. Some settlements listed in the
index may not have any individual entries; the principal reference is given
as a guide for nearby places of interest. If you are aware of any
omissions, changes, errors, or you have any suggestions, we will be happy to
hear from you. Our email address is: cast@btconnect.com First published 2001 Last update 19 June 2009 |
